The latest in the County permit saga...

As you know the County has denied us any and all permits thus far with baseless reasons; each request being denied for a new and different reason.

We have filed an appeal with the Board of Variances and Appeals and have finally received the hearing dates. Our hearing to determine if the Board of Variance and Appeals will hear our case is on May 24th; the actual hearing is on June 7th from 1:30-4:30 pm. It is posted on our website and FaceBook.

We were told that the more people who attend the hearing and testify in behalf of this program, the better, and the more likely the BVA will rule in our favor. So, PLEASE, if you are or can make yourself available, PLEASE do attend and testify for this program. The children testifying will also be a very loud statement.

If you have not already written a letter, please do as soon as possible. If the children have letters, notes, and pictures we would love to submit those as well. Please send them to Mayor, Council Members, and Parks & Recreation.
We have a sample letter posted on our website for your convenience: http://www.facebook.com/note.php?note_id=354779577903148

All we want and have ever wanted to do is teach our community members how to swim, making our community safer, and potentially saving lives.

Safety Tip for Summer Fun!

Kids will love this little song, listen and sing along:
Kids Alive - Do The Five!

Fence the pool/Fence the Pool
Shut the gate/Shut the Gate
Teach your kids to swim - it's great/It's Great!
Supervise/Supervise
- watch your mate/watch your mate
and learn how to resuscitate/and learn how to resuscitate!
*Song from Kids Alive

Please use FLAGS as your summer motto:

F = Find the Flags and swim between them
L = Look at the Safety Signs
A = Ask a lifeguard for Advice
G = Get a friend to swim with you
S = Stick your hand up for help

Swimming out of a RIP TIDE/RIP CURRENT

RIP Information:
o Rips are a strong undertow that creates a powerful moving channel of water between the shore and the deeper sea.

Characteristics:

  • Usually brownish in color.
  • Fewer waves breaking.
  • Choppy.
  • If you are swimming but NOT moving forward, you are likely in a RIP.

What to do if caught in a RIP:
o Never try to swim out of a RIP; remain calm.
o Float on your back & allow the RIP to pull you to deeper water; once you feel the powerful pull cease, you are in the "head" which dissipates and you are then able to swim to shore.
o Swim 25 yards/meters, parallel to the shore; then swim at a 45 angle to the shore.

Great Resources

We have a new page on our website under Education, "Safety" - which has a list of some great resources for you, the children, and your family. There are links to statistics, information, tips, techniques, as well as games, activities, fun sheets, color sheets, and a whole lot more. Definitely worth checking out!

We would like to point out the Stewie the Duck link; it has a downloadable APP that has a couple of water safety games, and their books (for free) that can be read to or by the children. This is a nice alternative for those who do not read yet.
