We are happy to announce that Maui County is stepping up their involvement in offering swimming lessons to the community. These lessons will be conducted by the lifeguards in Kihei, UpCountry, and Central; for children aged 4-6; 2 sessions of 4 classes each; first-come, first-served for the 24-32 children who are lucky enough to be accepted into this program. To enroll or for further details, please contact your local county pool or speak to one of the lifeguards on staff.

VIA holds the only permit and county contract to teach swimming lessons in Kihei, Central, and UpCountry. This contract requires us to carry a liability insurance policy, advanced certifications, and follow all rules and regulations. If you are contacted by other instructors, be very cautious as they are not authorized to teach swimming lessons at any county facility.

Challenges with County Permits

As you know we work in conjunction with Maui County to offer services (swimming lessons) to our community, at affordable rates.

You also know that it has been a struggle each new session to attain a permit for the use of the County Pools.

As well, you know that the County has been requiring us to take breaks between sessions even if it is during the children's vacation times, i.e. summer vacation, although we have submitted evidence that it is harmful for the children's learning to take these extended breaks; submitted a petition signed by our patrons; and submitted numerous documents depicting the need for our services.

Our lessons are intended to bridge the gap between what the county offers and what the community needs. We have filled this gap for over three years with enthusiasm, dedication, and conviction.

We are at a cross-roads with the county once again over these same concerns. We have attempted to work through these issues with the county, however we have not been fruitful. We are saddened and concerned that our keiki in Kihei may not be given the chance to learn how to swim this summer, therefore increasing the percentage of possible drownings.

If you would like to help us to be able to offer your family swimming lessons this summer and in the future, please contact the County of Maui Department of Parks and Recreation, your council person, and the Mayor's Office. For a list of contact information, see below:
