1st Two Swim Meets HUGE success!

VIA held its first two swim meets (6/28 & 6/30) and they were a smash! The competitors all performed beyond expectation while having a great time. We are proud of our swimmers for all their hard work and dedication!=) Pictures can be seen on our FaceBook page.

The latest in the County permit saga...

As you know the County has denied us any and all permits thus far with baseless reasons; each request being denied for a new and different reason.

We filed an appeal with the Board of Variances and Appeals and had the hearing in front of a panel. This panel will bring the information back to the entire BVA board, who will then vote to uphold the denial or to overturn it. The decision will be made at the BVA meeting on July 12th from 1:30-4:30 pm. It is posted on our website and FaceBook.

We have contacted several attorneys to get ready to bring it to the next level, which is the Second Circuit Court, just in case. We are hoping it does not go that far, but at this point believe that the County has control over the BVA, thus making our chances of winning slim.

If you have not already written a letter, please do as we want the County to know they are doing a dis-service to the community. If the children have letters, notes, and pictures send those as well. Please send them to Mayor, Council Members, and Parks & Recreation.
We have a sample letter posted on our website for your convenience: http://www.facebook.com/note.php?note_id=354779577903148

All we want and have ever wanted to do is teach our community members how to swim, making our community safer, and potentially saving lives.

Safety Tip for being safe at the Beach!

Look before you leap!

The ocean floor is shrouded by the swirling water and crashing waves.

Visibility is limited, even close to shore.

When visiting any beach, wade through the water while shuffling your feet to determine what the bottom consists of before diving in.

Make a point of peering into the water when the waves recede to determine if there are any objects in your path you need to be concerned about.

Never dive head-first into any open waters.

Be sure to watch the water and see which direction it is pulling as well as looking for rips or other hazards.

Awareness of your surroundings and the conditions of the surf are fundamental to your ocean safety.

Please be sure to submit your program evaluation at the end of the session.

Great Resources

We have a new page on our website under Education, "Safety" - which has a list of some great resources for you, the children, and your family. There are links to statistics, information, tips, techniques, as well as games, activities, fun sheets, color sheets, and a whole lot more. Definitely worth checking out!

We would like to point out the Stewie the Duck link; it has a downloadable APP that has a couple of water safety games, and their books (for free) that can be read to or by the children. This is a nice alternative for those who do not read yet.
