Lifeguard Training
~an American Red Cross Course

Lifeguard Training, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid, AED, Oxygen, Disease Prevention

The Lifeguard Training series is an all-inclusive course. This course teaches participants the knowledge and skills needed to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies at swimming pool facilities, oceans, and other aquatic facilities. The course content and hands-on activities prepare participants to recognize and respond quickly and effectively to emergencies and prevent drownings and injuries. Participants will learn about the duties and responsibilities of a lifeguard, how to carry these out in a professional manner and a number of lifeguarding techniques. The techniques covered in this course include: surveillance, how to use rescue equipment for a distressed, active-drowning victim, and a passive-drowning victim; how to identify behaviors of a swimmer, distressed swimmer, and an active or passive drowning victim, understand the components of an emergency action plan and how to activate it, understand the general procedures for an emergency occurring in the water or on land, perform equipment-based rescues, provide first aid and care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, and recognize and care for possible head, neck or back injuries.

Successful course completion performance requires participation in classroom and skill sessions, as well as successful performance in skill and knowledge evaluation. Due to the nature of the skills in this course, you will be participating in strenuous activities, such as performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on the floor and removing someone from the water. If you have a medical condition or disability, or if you have any questions about your ability to participate fully in this course, discuss this with your physician and the appropriate person at the local Red Cross Chapter before you start this course.

*100 yards of breaststroke using a pull, breath, kick and glide sequence.
*100 yards of either the front crawl or breaststroke. The 100 yards may be a combination of front
               crawl and breaststroke.

2) Starting in the water, swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive 7-10 feet, retrieve a 10-pound object, return to the surface, swim 20 yards back to the starting point with the object and exit the water without using a ladder or steps, within 1 minute, 40 seconds.
