Skill Level Descriptions


*All skills for each level are the same for 4+ year olds and Pre-School aged children.   We do group children according to age where indicated    (Pre-School 3-5 years old).   Pre-School children must be potty-trained and be able to be with an instructor without a parent/guardian.

 

  • Level Red(4 years +)


    Water Entry & Exit: enter and exit water safely using ladder, steps or side. Exit water safely over the side of the pool. Bobbing with Bubbles (10 repetitions) at side.

    Breath Control and Underwater Swimming: Wash face. Hold breath submerge face (mouth, nose, eyes). Submerge body blow bubbles through mouth. Blow bubbles through nose. Open eyes under water. Hold breath/submerge- 3 seconds. Retrieve object in 3 feet of water.

    Buoyancy on Front: Maintain front float position; face in or out of water; with/without support; 3 seconds. Recover from front float to standing position. Gliding: with/without assistance. Front Glide; face in water; 5 seconds.

    Kick using Barbell: Unassisted preferred; 3-5 yards.

    Changing Direction and Position: with/without support/assistance. Change direction of travel while using any stroke (Barbell OK).

    Buoyancy on Back: Maintain back float position; with/without support. Recover from back float to standing position.

    Swim on Front: Flutter Kick (supported)-alternating leg action.

    Swim on Back: Flutter Kick (supported)-alternating leg action.

    Water Safety + Helping Others: Water safety rules.

     

     

     

     

  • Level Red-Orange

    Water Exploration: Retrieve object in 3 feet of water; Bobbing with Bubbles (10 repetitions); Traveling Bobbing; 5 feet.

    Breath Control and Underwater Swimming: Blow bubbles through mouth & nose; Open eyes under water.

    Gliding: without assistance: Front Glide, face in water, 5 seconds; Back Glide, 5 seconds; Front Glide; face in water & kick 5 feet; unassisted; Back Glide & kicking 5-15 feet; unassisted.

    Buoyancy on Front: Maintain front float position; face in water; without support; 5 seconds; Recover from front float to standing position.

    Buoyancy on Back: Maintain back float position; without support; 5-10 seconds; Recover from back float to standing position.

    Kick with Barbell/Noodle: Unassisted; 5 yards.

    Changing Direction and Position: with/without support/assistance: Change direction of travel while using any stroke (Barbell OK).

    Lateral Rolls: Roll over-front to back; Roll over-back to front.

    Vertical Rotation: Front Float to Back Float; Back Float to Front Float.

    Swim on Front: Flutter Kick; unsupported-alternating leg action; attempting arm action.

    Swim on Back: Flutter Kick unsupported, 15 yards; Back Stroke Arms-Standing; Finning (on back); Flutter Kick-alternating leg action; attempting arm action.

    Water Safety + Helping Others: Water safety rules.

  • Level Orange

    Gliding: with/without assistance: Front Glide; face in water & kick 5-15 feet; unassisted
    Back Glide; & kicking 5-15 feet; unassisted

    Kick with Barbell: Unassisted preferred; 3-5 yards

    Lateral Rolls: Roll over-front to back. Roll over-back to front

    Vertical Rotation: Front Float to Back Float. Back Float to Front Float.

    Swim on Front: Flutter Kick on Front; (unsupported)-15 yards. Front Crawl Arms-Standing. Rhythmic Breathing, at side of pool. Combined arm & leg actions on front-15 yards (Front Crawl)

    Swim on Back: Flutter Kick on Back; (unsupported)-15 yards. Back Crawl Arms-Standing. Finning (on Back). Combined arm & leg actions on back-15 yards (Back Crawl).

    Water Exploration: Unsupported Bobs with bubbles-10 repetitions. Deep Water Orientation. Jump into waist-deep water. Feet-First Surface Dive.

    Swim on Back: Flutter Kick (supported)-alternating leg action.

  • Level Orange-Yellow

    Breath Control and Underwater Swimming: Underwater swim, 5 feet of water-5 yards; Retrieve object in 5 feet of water.

    Changing Direction and Position without support/assistance: Change Direction without assistance.

    Gliding: with/without assistance: Front Glide + Flutter Kick; 15 yds; Back Glide + Flutter Kick; 15 yds.

    Front Crawl: Front Crawl Arms w/Beginning Rhythmic Breathing; 5 yds.

    Back Crawl: Back Crawl Arms and Kick-5-10 yards.

    Elementary Back Stroke-Survival Stroke: Elementary Back Stroke Kick-Introduction; Elementary Back; Stroke Arms-Introduction.

    Water Exploration: Traveling Bobbing-10 repetitions; 10 yds; Jump into deep water; Feet-First Surface Dive; Jump in; swim 5 yds.

    Lateral Rolls: Roll over-front to back; Roll over-back to front.

    Vertical Rotation: Front Float to Back Float; Back Float to Front Float.

  • Level Yellow

    Changing Direction and Position/without support/assistance: Demonstrate Open Turn.

    Gliding: with/without assistance: Front Glide + Flutter Kick. Back Glide + Flutter Kick.

    Front Crawl: Front Crawl Arms w/Rhythmic Breathing (standing). Front Crawl with Rhythmic Breathing-15 yards.

    Back Crawl: Back Crawl Arms (standing). Back Crawl Arms and Kick-15 yards.

    Elementary Back Stroke-Survival Stroke: Elementary Back Stroke Kick-15 yards. Elementary Back Stroke Arms-15 yards.

    Water Exploration: Deep Water Bobs-10 repetitions. Jump into deep water and swim 10 yards on Front. Jump into deep water, swim 20 yards; 1st 10 yards on Front; reverse (Vertical Rotation); 2nd 10 yards kick on Back; return to start.

    Water Entry-Diving: Head-first entry from sitting or kneeling position. Head-first entry from one-knee or crouching position. Head-first entry from squatting position. Head-first entry from standing position.

  • Level Yellow-Green

    Water Entry and Exit: Head-first entry (Deep Dive); Stride Jump; Jump or Dive; swim 10 yards; Lateral Roll (to opposite side); Swim 10 yards.

    Breath Control and Underwater Swimming: Underwater swim, 5 feet of water-10 yards; Retrieve object in 5-10 feet of water; Deep Water Bobbing-10x.

    Treading: Tread Water-15-30 seconds; Sculling-in place.

    Front Crawl: Front Crawl w/Rhythmic Breathing-25 yards/meters.

    Back Crawl: Back Crawl-25 yards/meters.

    Elementary Back Stroke-Survival Stroke: Elementary Back Stroke (Arms and Legs)-25 yards/meters.

    Breast Stroke: Introduction of Breast Stroke Kick (Whip Kick) w/noodle or Barbell; Introduction of Breast Stroke Arms; Introduction of Breast
    Stroke-combined arms and legs-5-10 yds.
    Butterfly Stroke: Introduction of Dolphin Kick w/noodle or Barbell; Dolphin Kick, 25 yards/meters; Introduction of Butterfly Stroke Arms.

    Changing Direction and Position without support/assistance: Demonstrate Open Turn; Introduction to Flip Turn Sequence.

    Water Safety + Helping Others: Water Safety Rules.

     

  • Level Green

    Water Entry and Exit: Head-first entry (Deep Dive) with glide. Head-first entry (Shallow Dive) with glide; top 3' of water. Stride Jump. Kneeling Dive. Standing Dive. Standing Dive & swim 25 yards-stroke of choice. Jump or Dive, swim 10 yards, Lateral Roll (to opposite side), Swim 10 yards. Tuck Surface Dive.

    Treading: Tread Water-30 seconds. Sculling-in place. Sculling-feet first. Sculling-head first.

    Front Crawl: Front Crawl w/Rhythmic Breathing-25 yards/meters.

    Back Stroke: Back Stroke 25 yards/meters.
    Elementary Back Stroke: Elementary Back Stroke 25 yards/meters.

    Breast Stroke: Breast Stroke Kick, 5-10 yards. Breast Stroke Arms, 5-10 yards. Breast Stroke combined arms and legs-15 yards. Breast Stroke arms and breathing, 5-10 yards. Breast Stroke-15 yards.
    Butterfly Stroke: Dolphin Kick, 50 yards/meters; Introduction of Butterfly Stroke Arms; Butterfly Stoke combined arms and legs, 5 yards.

    Change of Direction: Flip Turn Sequence on Front.  Flip Turn Sequence on Back.

    Water Safety + Helping Others: HELP & Huddle Position. Adult CPR. Ice Safety and Rescue.

  • Level Green-Blue

    Water Entry and Exit: Long Shallow Dive. Feet First Surface Dive to depth of 7 feet; swim underwater 10 yards. Tuck Surface Dive; underwater swim 10 yards.

    Front Crawl: Front Crawl w/Rhythmic Breathing-50 yards/meters.

    Back Stroke: Back Stroke 50 yards/meters.

    Breast Stroke: Breast Stroke-50 yards/meters.

    Side Stroke: Scissor Kick, may use Barbell). Side Stroke Arms. Side Stroke combined arms and legs-15 yards.
    Butterfly Stroke: Dolphin Kick, 75 yards/meters; Butterfly Stroke Arms, 10yards; Butterfly Stoke combined arms and legs, 15 yards.

    Survival Skills: Survival Float-1 minute. Overhead, feet-first sculling.

    Cardiovascular Enduarnce Swim: 5-minute continuous swim; stroke of choice. 5-minute swim using Front Crawl; Back Stroke; Side Stroke; Breast Stroke; and Elementary Back Stroke.

    Water Safety + Helping Others: Jump into deep water; swim 25 yards wearing long pants, long-sleeved shirt, and light tennis shoes. Disrobe in Shallow water. Jump into deep water; swim 3 minutes; disrobe in deep water.

  • Level Blue-Purple

    Water Entry and Exit: Pike Surface Dive. Jump from High Diving Board.  Dive off Starting Blocks.  Standing Dive from Diving Board.

    Front Crawl: Front Crawl w/Rhythmic Breathing-100 yards/meters.

    Back Stroke: Back Stroke 100 yards/meters.

    Breast Stroke: Breast Stroke-100 yards/meters.

    Side Stroke: Side Stroke-100 yards/meters.

    Butterfly: Dolphin Kick-100 yards/meters. Butterfly Arms-25 yards/meters. Butterfly arms and breathing-15 yards. Butterfly Stroke-25 yards/meters.

    Cardiovascular Enduarnce Swim: 10 minute swim using 4 different strokes.

    Treading: Tread water with No hands-5 minutes.

    Changing Direction and Position: Flip turn while swimming on front. Flip turn while swimming on back.

    Water Safety + Helping Others: Clearing Mask and Snorkle. Retrieve object from 9 feet of water. Retrieve a 10-lb. brick from 9 feet of water. Diving Board Safety.
